VALID-ER is indicated to treat certain types of seizures (epilepsy). This medication is an anticonvulsant that works in the brain tissue to stop seizures. VALID-ER is also indicated to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), and helps prevent migraine headaches.
VALID-ER dissociates to the valproate ion in the gastrointestinal tract and its activity in epilepsy is related to increased brain concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Bioavailability: approximately 90%. Time to maximum plasma valproate concentrations (Cmax): 4 to 17 hours. Plasma protein binding: 10% at 40mcg/mL to 18.5% at 130 mcg/mL. Mean plasma clearance: 0.56 L/hr/1.73m2 Volume of distribution: 11L/1.73m2 Mean terminal half-life: 9 to 16 hours following oral dosing regimens of 250 to 1000 mg.
